What makes a birthday letter land

Letters for milestone birthdays

Eighteen, twenty-one, thirty, fifty, eighty — the birthdays people brace for are the ones where a letter does the most work.

A milestone letter can be written years early and scheduled to arrive on the morning of the day. Parents often write an eighteenth-birthday letter while their child is still small, when the feeling is strongest and the memory is sharpest.
